How the measures work

Travel communities. Groups of Census block groups identified by Leiden community detection on the travel network. The outlines show one partition of the network.

Racial boundaries. At each block group, the map ranks the strongest boundary among six pairs of White, Black, Hispanic, and Asian populations. The SBI combines the strength and relative direction of opposing log-density gradients with the local presence of both groups. A density weight reduces scores where both populations are sparse. Local gradients use a Gaussian kernel (σ = 5 km) within 10 km.

Population share. The percentage of a block group’s residents in the selected racial or ethnic group.

Coverage. The map includes the Chicago commuting zone: the city and surrounding places connected by commuting. Boundary percentiles rank block groups with estimates within this area.
